Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust transforms healthcare infrastructure

< Return to the insights hub

Overview

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, consisting of Hillingdon Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospital, is at the forefront of healthcare infrastructure transformation under the government's New Hospital Programme. As part of the Trust’s transformative plans to unveil a state-of-the-art Hillingdon Hospital – designed to be digitally enhanced, sustainable, and future-ready –  it embarked on a significant medical records digitisation project.

The challenge

The project to digitise medical records at Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Trust stemmed from several critical drivers. Central to its digital strategy was enhancing healthcare infrastructure and achieving greater digital maturity for sustainability. Digitising patient records stored in an off-site, leased facility was essential to streamline operations, reduce costs, and optimise space. The urgency spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for adaptable healthcare solutions. Furthermore, the Trust aimed to foster collaboration within the North West London Integrated Care System, aligning clinical document management across multiple acute trusts.

The solution

Following a competitive procurement period, Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Trust selected MediViewer for its user-friendly touch-screen interface and robust capabilities in scanning, indexing, archiving, and accessing medical records at scale. Integration with Hillingdon Care Record and Cerner EPR ensured cohesive patient health records and regional alignment.

We facilitated an early adopter go-live with the ophthalmology department within two months, followed by phased deployment across other specialities. This approach allowed for seamless resolution of implementation challenges. Our process included in-depth engagement with stakeholders impacted by MediViewer, mapping current workflows, and providing tailored one-to-one training and ward floorwalks. ‘Train the trainer’ sessions empowered MediViewer champions to ensure consistent training standards and facilitate smooth adoption across departments, maximising user engagement and deployment efficiency.

Trust benefits

●      MediViewer has enabled Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Trust to become paper-lite, boosting efficiency, reclaiming space, and generating substantial cost savings by eliminating a costly off-site records storage facility.

●      Clinicians responded positively to the intuitive technology, praising its ease of use and customisable navigation and search capabilities, seamlessly accessing digital patient records across connected hospital sites.

●       The Trust plans to integrate MediViewer across all partners in the North West London Integrated Care System so that every site has access to the same digital patient records. This will be the biggest instance of connected hospital sites deploying MediViewer across the UK.

Corner Graphic Corner Graphic

“This project is an important part of our journey to remove the need to move large amounts of paper around our organisation. By scanning our existing paper notes and any new paper that is created, clinical teams will have instant access to all parts of their patients’ medical records.”

- Robbie Cline, joint chief information officer, The Hillingdon Hospitals and London North West
