Mizaic to power large-scale document migration programme at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
< Return to the insights hub
As part of our continued growth, we’re pleased to announce a new partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). Through this deal, our electronic document management system (EDMS), MediViewer, will play a central role in the Trust’s wider record modernisation programme, designed to strengthen access to clinical documents and patient information. Here’s more about the project and what we’re set to help the organisation achieve.
About University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
UHB is one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals, home of Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and Solihull Hospital. The organisation treats more than 2.2 million patients each year, with over 2,700 beds across its sites, and spans a range of specialist services including trauma, burns, plastics, and neurosciences. Given the sheer scale of the organisation alone, it’s imperative that patient records are accessible, secure, and intuitively connected – not only streamlining workflows for clinicians, but also improving the safety and efficiency of patient outcomes throughout the entire care pathway.
Powering a pacey migration from an incumbent repository
UHB is no stranger to digitisation, having operated using an on-premise enterprise content management (ECM) platform for almost eight years already. However, while the incumbent solution served the Trust well at first, it needed a more future-fit solution.
Signing a multi-year contract with Mizaic, UHB will leverage MediViewer’s core capabilities to strengthen the digital foundations it already has in place. The project will kickstart with a pacey migration, bringing more than 235 million images across to MediViewer. As a cloud-based platform integrating with more than 40 clinical systems, it will continue to unify and manage large volumes of unstructured data in a single, scalable environment. Plus, by integrating UHB’s in-house clinical portal and electronic patient record (EPR), clinicians will have direct access to information within existing workflows – reducing system switching and supporting more efficient decision making at the point of care.
As is the case with every MediViewer rollout, data security and information governance are central to the programme’s design and delivery. All patient information will be handled in accordance with NHS data protection requirements, alongside robust technical and organisational controls to safeguard confidentiality. The transition will enhance resilience, strengthen access control, and provide improved audit and monitoring capabilities – ensuring patient data remains secure while supporting more efficient clinical access.
Jon Pickering, CEO at Mizaic, comments:
"This partnership represents another significant milestone and builds further momentum behind MediViewer.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is an organisation known for its strong in-house capabilities, so to be trusted to support a programme of this scale and complexity is something we’re incredibly proud of. We’re looking forward to working closely with the team to deliver a flexible platform that simplifies access to unstructured data within existing clinical workflows, strengthening the Trust’s digital foundations while supporting sustainable growth.”
Tailoring the EDMS to the needs of the trust
As with every Mizaic deployment, this is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Alongside MediViewer’s core functionality, the platform will be configured to align with UHB’s specific requirements as digital maturity evolves, including support for FHIR-enabled document sharing and interoperability, with additional developments already in the project pipeline.
"This is a complex environment, with a significant volume of data and a large number of upstream systems, so confidence in the migration approach and ingestion performance was critical from the outset. Mizaic’s experience in delivering comparable, high-volume programmes assured us the transition could be achieved at pace."
